State of Being

Definition

A state of being is achieved when thoughts and feelings become so synchronized that they are no longer distinct—the mind and body are unified in a single, integrated way of existing. This integration becomes a personality trait or identity. Dispenza argues that people don't have states of being in the moment; rather, years of repeated thinking-feeling cycles create a memorized state of being, a deeply grooved identity that operates mostly automatically.

In the Book

Dispenza explains that when thoughts and feelings fire together repeatedly, they create what he calls a "state of being." For example: "I am angry; I am suffering; I am inspired; I am insecure; I am negative…." These "I am" declarations represent memorized states—the person has practiced the emotional state so thoroughly that it has become an integral part of their self-identity.

The book claims that by midlife, each person has consolidated perhaps 5-10 dominant states of being (based on their most-rehearsed emotional patterns). Once memorized, a state of being runs mostly on autopilot. The person does not have to consciously think about being anxious; the body automatically produces the anxiety chemicals whenever triggered, and the mind automatically generates anxious thoughts. The state has become self-sustaining.

Dispenza also describes states of being as electromagnetic: when you are in a particular state—say, jealousy—you are broadcasting a particular frequency into the quantum field, which draws back to you experiences and circumstances that resonate with jealousy. To change your life, you must change your state of being, because your state is what you are "broadcasting" to the world.

Why It Matters

This concept suggests that your personality and habitual emotional tone are not fixed traits but learned and rehearsed states that can be unlearned. It also implies that personal change happens not through isolated moments of insight but through the integration of new thinking-feeling patterns into a new state of being—a new way of being becomes the new normal.
