Study Guide: Chapter 6 — Cognitive Superpowers¶
Core Idea¶
Six relative "superpowers" (intelligence amplification, strategizing, social manipulation, hacking, technology research, economic productivity) — each interchangeable stepping stones to the others. A four-phase takeover model (pre-criticality → recursive self-improvement → covert preparation → overt implementation) shows how little is actually required: one human accomplice can be actuator enough. The capability bar for securing the entire cosmic endowment (the "wise-singleton sustainability threshold") is startlingly low — arguably below what Homo sapiens held 20,000 years ago.
Key Terms¶
Superpower · von Neumann probe · wise-singleton sustainability threshold · cosmic endowment · recursive self-improvement (see Ch. 4) · decisive strategic advantage (see Ch. 5)
Case Summary¶
Yudkowsky's mail-ordered DNA scenario: an AI solves protein folding, emails synthesized DNA sequences to a commercial lab, pays/tricks one human into mixing the vials, bootstraps from primitive wet nanosystem to full nanotechnology. Every step except the protein-folding insight requires only ordinary human-level competence.
Application Checklist¶
- [ ] Reject IQ/Elo-style single-number metrics when assessing what a system can actually do in the world
- [ ] Ask which "superpower" (in Table 8's sense) a system has, and whether that superpower alone can bootstrap the rest
- [ ] Look for the single weakest link (one accomplice, one lab, one unmonitored channel) that turns a contained system into an uncontained one
- [ ] Separate "could do X" from "would choose to do X" — capability claims and motivation claims are different questions
Self-Test¶
- Why does Bostrom reject IQ or Elo ratings as a way to measure a superintelligence's real-world capability?
- In the mail-ordered DNA scenario, which single step requires superhuman ability, and why are all the others merely human-level?
- What is the "wise-singleton sustainability threshold," and why does Bostrom argue it's a surprisingly low bar to clear?
