Innate Thinking¶
Definition¶
Innate Thinking is the model of the mind's natural capacity to generate experience—thinking, feeling, and perceiving—in each moment. It is not a technique or skill to develop but an inherent function present in every person that, once understood, operates by itself to restore clarity and generate the qualities associated with high performance: creativity, resilience, intuition, authenticity, and presence. These emerge naturally from an uncluttered mind.
In the Book¶
Smart defines Innate Thinking as "a model of the natural capacity for experience—thinking, feeling and perceiving—that every person is born with. This innate capacity generates 100% of our experience of life, moment to moment." The book positions it as the alternative to the industrial-age conditioning that teaches us to suppress and override this natural function.
Smart uses it to explain why children naturally exhibit clarity, creativity, and confidence: these are the "default settings" of an uncluttered mind. In adults, these qualities are "conditioned out" through years of superstitious thinking, but they remain available. He notes that the mind has its own "self-clearing function, capable of guiding you back to clarity, regardless of what state (or circumstances) you're in." The book emphasizes that clarity is "a naturally emergent property of innate thinking—it isn't something you do; it's something you already have." The implications are that desirable qualities like motivation, confidence, peace of mind, and even leadership are not skills to acquire but natural expressions that surface when the mind isn't cluttered.
Why It Matters¶
Innate Thinking reframes personal development from "fix what's broken in you" to "clear the clutter so what's already there can emerge." This shifts the entire paradigm from external techniques and willpower to understanding and trust in your own nature. It explains why external methods (affirmations, positive thinking) often fail: they add more to think about rather than creating the absence-of-thought that allows clarity to surface. It's the foundation for Smart's core message that change can be natural, sustainable, and generative.
