The Law of the Jiggle

Definition

Weinberg's "First Law of Intervention" states it in three words: "Less is more." When a system is stuck in a rut, the effective intervention is rarely a big, forceful change — it's a tiny modification in how the client sees their own situation. Because systems (and people) that are working smoothly can get too grooved into one way of operating, the outside consultant's job is often just to "jiggle" that groove loose, not to redesign it wholesale.

In the Book

Weinberg develops this from his own experience being brought in as a speaker or consultant to organizations: he prefers to be introduced simply as "someone from outside with whom anyone can discuss matters of concern" rather than as an authority delivering a prescription, specifically to preserve room for unstructured jiggling rather than management-directed fixing. He connects it to the earlier "Third-Time Charm" idea — that a consultant who becomes too enmeshed in an organization's habitual thinking eventually loses the outside vantage point needed to jiggle it — and argues that a consultant must have experienced being jiggled themselves, both to know what it feels like and to stay capable of getting unstuck. He then uses the parable of blind people examining an elephant (each touching a different part and concluding the whole animal is like that part) to illustrate what the jiggle is actually targeting: not ignorance of facts, but a partial, over-fixed view of the whole that a small shift in vantage point can dissolve.

Why It Matters

This reframes effective intervention as calibrated to what a system can actually integrate, not to the size of the problem — a principle that applies to therapy, policy, product change, and personal habit change alike, wherever forceful pushes trigger resistance that a small, well-placed nudge would not. It also supplies a specific mechanism for why minimal intervention works: the target usually isn't missing information, it's stuck in one partial view of the whole, and a jiggle's job is to loosen that view rather than replace it with a bigger one.
