System Archetypes

Definition

"Nature's templates": generic plots — Senge presents nine, from limits to growth and shifting the burden to the tragedy of the commons and growth and underinvestment — that recur regardless of the specific characters or industry involved, because they're built from the same small vocabulary of feedback loops and delays. Recognizing an archetype immediately suggests where the high- and low-leverage points in a given structure are.

In the Book

Chapter 6 introduces the two foundational archetypes: limits to growth (a reinforcing growth loop meets a balancing constraint; leverage lies in the constraint, never in pushing the growth engine harder) and shifting the burden (a symptomatic fix crowds out a fundamental fix, breeding dependency — the direct mechanism behind addiction, eroding goals, and organizational dependence on consultants). Chapter 7 combines both into growth and underinvestment, applied at length to WonderTech's collapse; Chapter 8 reapplies it to People Express Airlines. The Appendix (Ch. 22) catalogs all nine with structure, early-warning symptom, and management principle for each.

Why It Matters

The archetypes convert "management judgment" — the tacit pattern-recognition experienced managers already have but usually can't explain — into a shared, teachable language. Senge argues this is the difference between solving one instance of a problem and changing the thinking that produced it in the first place.

Connections

  • parallels treacherous-turn — the same delayed-feedback mechanism: growth-and-underinvestment lets an organization's standards erode invisibly (WonderTech's delivery times, Ch.7) until the failure surfaces all at once and is no longer fixable, structurally identical to a system behaving well until it no longer needs to.
  • formalizes leverage-points — the nine archetypes give Meadows' abstract leverage-point hierarchy a diagnostic checklist: each archetype names, in advance, where the leverage in a given recurring structure will and won't be found.
