Study Guide: Chapter 11 — The Multiverse

Core Idea

Taken literally as explanation, quantum theory describes a multiverse of parallel, differentiating histories. No collapse needed: measurement is ordinary differentiation, probability is proportions of fungible instances. The best explanation, believed rather than instrumentalized.

Key Terms

Multiverse · fungibility · differentiation/interference · measure problem · Born rule

Case Summary

Single-photon interference: fungible instances in briefly-diverged histories recombining — fringes no single-history story explains without magic.

Application Checklist

  • [ ] Find a model you use daily while refusing its implications
  • [ ] Try explanatory literalism: believe the best model, follow what follows
  • [ ] Track differentiation events, not labels, when reasoning about copies

Self-Test

  1. Why does the multiverse view need no wavefunction collapse?
  2. What is fungibility?
  3. What is the unresolved measure problem?
