Squaring — Wolf's Mind Yoga of Focus and Release

Definition

In quantum mechanics, "squaring" a wave function's amplitude converts an abstract possibility into a definite probability. Wolf borrows this operation and extends it, by assertion rather than derivation, into a general theory of mind: every experience begins as a "possibility-wave" in what he calls "sub-spacetime," a realm of unmanifested alternatives. The mind's act of attention "squares" that wave into a concrete "probability-curve" — a focused moment of awareness. Un-squaring runs the process in reverse: letting go of expectation and memory spreads a focused experience back out into diffuse possibility. Wolf's central claim is that this focus/release cycle is not merely something the mind does in time — it is what generates the felt direction of time itself.

In the Book

Chapter 9 builds the mechanism from concrete, structured examples: Wolf tracks his own natural wake-up time across an imagined 300 mornings to build a bell-shaped "probability-curve," and a jar of 30 shaken quarters to show the same curve emerging from coin flips, arguing that any acquired skill or habit is really consciousness repeatedly "squaring" the same possibility-wave until the curve narrows into automatic behavior. He then introduces "triplets" — a precedent blur, a focal point, and a posterior blur — as the atomic unit of experience, and states what he calls "the quantum law of normal time order": ordinarily the blur before a moment of focus is larger (more uncertain) than the blur after it, which is what makes a moment feel like it is moving from past into future (Figure 9.3). Chains of triplets that progressively narrow (Figure 9.4) constitute forward-moving, habit-forming experience; the reverse sequence (Figure 9.5) — "letting go of the past" — is what mind yoga cultivates, since spreading a possibility-wave back out is, in Wolf's account, literally moving backward in subjective time. He extends this to a claim that consciousness acts like the pumped-in energy in a refrigerator, locally reversing the universe's drift toward entropy. Chapter 8 supplies the physics vocabulary underlying all of this — possibility-waves, sub-spacetime, and the squaring operation — explicitly framed by Wolf as the payoff of the "sphere of many radii" device discussed in chapter 7.

Why It Matters

Speculative physics-mysticism, reported as the book's claim and not as established science: nothing in mainstream quantum mechanics licenses applying the wave-function-squaring operation to autobiographical memory, habit formation, or the felt direction of time — this is Wolf's own extension, presented with the vocabulary but not the mathematics or experimental support of physics. Bracketing that leap, the concept still offers a vivid, testable-feeling distinction worth taking domain-neutral: treating "attention that narrows toward a specific outcome" and "attention that lets go and stays open to many outcomes" as two literally different, controllable modes of engaging a moment — one that builds fixed habits and a stable felt past, one that stays available to revision — is a usable frame for thinking about how repeated attention, in any domain, calcifies into constraint.
