Study Guide: Chapter 9 — Personal Mastery¶
Core Idea¶
Personal mastery = continually clarifying vision + continually seeing current reality clearly. The gap (creative tension) generates action toward the vision, unless the anxiety it produces (emotional tension) gets relieved by lowering the vision instead.
Key Terms¶
Creative tension · emotional tension · structural conflict (Fritz) · willpower / conflict manipulation / eroding vision (three coping strategies) · commitment to the truth
Case Summary¶
Bill Russell self-graded 1-100 across 1,200+ games, never above 65 — the unmet standard drove excellence, not failure. WonderTech/People Express's eroding standards (Ch. 7-8) are the organizational form of lowering a vision to relieve emotional tension. Senge's own "willpower" pattern: bulldozing through colleagues he felt had "let him down," until naming the pattern changed his response.
Application Checklist¶
- [ ] When you feel anxious about a gap between goal and reality, check whether you're about to lower the goal to relieve the anxiety
- [ ] Ask "what would this get me?" of a stated goal to find the more intrinsic vision underneath
- [ ] Notice your own default coping strategy (erosion / conflict manipulation / willpower) under pressure
Self-Test¶
- Why is creative tension different from the anxiety (emotional tension) that often accompanies it?
- What is structural conflict, and why doesn't willpower resolve it?
- Why does Senge treat "commitment to the truth" as more powerful than any specific technique for personal growth?
