Strategic Elusiveness

Definition

Desire operates on anticipation and mystery, not certainty and presence: once something is fully known or fully possessed, the imagination that generated its appeal has nothing left to do, and interest deflates. Most people do the opposite of what sustaining desire requires — they make themselves maximally available, answerable, and transparent, believing this reads as generosity and connection, when in fact familiarity and complete predictability are what erode fascination. The prescription is not deception but pacing: choosing what to reveal and when, so that another person's imagination stays actively engaged rather than being prematurely satisfied.

In the Book

Law 5 is built around Coco Chanel, who Greene presents as understanding this mechanism with deliberate, strategic clarity rather than by accident. Rather than disclosing her impoverished, illegitimate origins accurately, she circulated multiple conflicting versions of her own biography, turning inconsistency itself into a source of fascination. In her relationships with figures like the Duke of Westminster, Igor Stravinsky, and Arthur Capel, she was intensely present in moments of connection and then genuinely unavailable, never allowing any one relationship to define her — which the book argues intensified rather than damaged her suitors' desire. Her design work applied the same principle structurally: garments built on restraint that implied more than they stated, requiring the wearer to complete the design, and a business practice that deliberately kept the Chanel suit from becoming so available that possessing it became ordinary.

Why It Matters

This gives a mechanism, not a platitude, for why constant self-disclosure and maximal availability — in personal branding, negotiation, leadership presence, or courtship — routinely underperform calibrated reserve: an audience's, partner's, or counterpart's engagement is a function of the work their imagination still has to do, and that work runs out the moment nothing remains unresolved. It reframes "mystery" as something built on genuine depth selectively revealed rather than withholding for its own sake — mystery without substance collapses under scrutiny, but substance fully disclosed all at once collapses interest just as reliably.
