Study Guide: Chapter 6 — Nature's Templates: Identifying the Patterns That Control Events

Core Idea

Systems archetypes are recurring generic structures (built from reinforcing loops, balancing loops, delays) that recur across domains. Two foundational ones: Limits to Growth (a growth loop meets a balancing constraint) and Shifting the Burden (a quick symptomatic fix crowds out the fundamental fix, breeding dependency).

Key Terms

Systems archetype · limits to growth · shifting the burden · eroding goals · fundamental vs. symptomatic solution

Case Summary

Maine dam drowning (fighting the visible current kills; the counterintuitive move — diving into the downstream flow — would have saved him). High-tech firm's R&D growth strangled by its own management complexity. Overwork "solved" by drinking instead of limiting workload — a reinforcing addiction cycle. US full-employment target eroding from 4% to 6-7%.

Application Checklist

  • [ ] For a stalled improvement effort, ask: is the leverage in pushing the growth engine harder, or in removing a limiting factor?
  • [ ] Name any symptomatic fix (consultant, quick promotion, ad campaign) standing in for a fundamental one you're avoiding
  • [ ] Check whether a "target" you've quietly lowered is itself a shifting-the-burden move

Self-Test

  1. Why does pushing harder on the reinforcing loop in a "limits to growth" situation make things worse, not better?
  2. What are the three tell-tale clues of a shifting-the-burden structure?
  3. How does "eroding goals" fit inside the shifting-the-burden archetype?
