Study Guide: Chapter 18 — The Leader's New Work¶
Core Idea¶
Learning-organization leaders are designers (building systems and integrated learning processes), stewards (holding a vision in service of a larger purpose story), and teachers (helping people see systemic structure and purpose, not just events). Their core task is generating and holding creative tension across the whole organization.
Key Terms¶
Leader as designer/steward/teacher · purpose story · visionary crisis manager vs. visionary strategist · creative tension (organizational scale)
Case Summary¶
Joanne's preemptive limits-to-growth fix that "dissolves" a problem before it's ever visible as a crisis. Bill Gore's controlled-growth story (25%/year cap, "57.5 years to have everyone in the world working for Gore"). Lyndon Johnson's Great Society vision destroyed by lying about Vietnam War costs — the "credibility gap."
Application Checklist¶
- [ ] Ask whether a recent "leadership win" was crisis heroics or invisible design work that prevented the crisis
- [ ] Check whether your organization's vision is backed by a purpose story, or is just a stated goal
- [ ] Notice whether leadership communication operates mostly at the event level, or reaches systemic structure and purpose
Self-Test¶
- Why is "leader as designer" the most important but least credited leadership role, per the ocean-liner exercise?
- What's the difference between a "visionary crisis manager" and a "visionary strategist," and why do both fall short?
- Why did Lyndon Johnson's leadership fail despite genuine vision and enrollment skill?
