V2MOM Cascading Commitment¶
Definition¶
V2MOM — Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles, Measures — is Salesforce's management system in which every leader, starting with the CEO, publishes a document distilling what they personally commit to accomplishing that year, prioritized in order. Each direct report then builds their own V2MOM by taking a portion of what their boss promised and making it their own commitment, and this chains all the way down the organization and back up to the CEO's original document.
In the Book¶
Moore describes V2MOM in Chapter Eight as one of three forces (alongside Salesforce's philanthropic culture and its blend of collaboration with competitiveness) that let the four-zones framework actually take hold at Salesforce in under a year. Marc Benioff and cofounder Parker Harris installed the system "at the company's inception," and its power comes from two disciplines working together: methods (what each person commits to) get prioritized only after "vigorous dialog with their peers and their bosses," starting with Benioff socializing his own draft for input and criticism before anyone else's prioritization chains off it. Moore is careful to note the limit of the tool: "while I am proud that zone management frameworks are making a contribution to the company's current success, in actuality they are only vocabulary... they do not substitute for team."
Why It Matters¶
Most organizations declare priorities top-down as slogans that never connect to what an individual contributor actually does that week. Cascading commitment solves this by making priority a literal inheritance chain — you can trace any team's method back through their manager's method to the CEO's method — which turns "alignment" from an aspiration into a checkable structural property of the org chart, applicable to any hierarchy trying to keep strategy and daily work from drifting apart.
