Sophisticated Falsificationism

Definition

Lakatos's repair of Popper's naive falsificationism holds that no theory is ever falsified by a clash with evidence by itself — only replaced. Refutation requires a rival theory that meets three conditions: it predicts novel facts the old theory forbade, it explains the old theory's prior successes, and some of its novel predictions get corroborated. "There is no falsification before the emergence of a better theory." Science is a contest between successive theories, not a duel between a single theory and nature.

In the Book

Lakatos identifies two fatal defects in naive falsificationism that this repairs. First, the Duhem problem: every test involves auxiliary assumptions, so a failed prediction can always have its blame shifted rather than landing on the main theory. Second, every theory is "born refuted" into an ocean of anomalies — Newtonian mechanics misbehaved on the Moon's motion for decades and on Mercury's perihelion permanently, yet naive falsification's one-strike rule would have killed it at birth. The book's key episode contrasts two uses of the same auxiliary-hypothesis maneuver: postulating an unseen planet to explain Uranus's orbit succeeded (Neptune, found by Le Verrier's calculation), while the same move for Mercury (a planet "Vulcan") failed forever — yet Newton's theory wasn't actually abandoned until Einstein's arrived, offering a rival that kept Newton's successes and explained Mercury's perihelion besides.

Why It Matters

This concept dissolves a specific trap: treating a list of known flaws as sufficient grounds for abandoning a working system. Lakatos's rule generalizes past physics — never retire an architecture, vendor, or strategy on its bug reports alone; retire it on a benchmarked rival that keeps its wins and fixes its losses, plus one new win besides. It reframes "why hasn't this obviously broken thing been replaced yet?" as a question about whether a genuine successor exists, not about the tolerance of the people still using it, and it supplies a concrete discipline: stop collecting grievances against the incumbent and build the rival instead.
